TORRY SHOW PROMISE IN OPENING FRIENDLIES

At long last, football returned to Vicente Garcia Stadium last Saturday, when Torry hosted div 2b side Elche Ilicitano. Only 24 hours earlier, they had embarked on an opening warm up match, competing against Alcorcon at the very impressive Campoamor resort.

Alcorcon hail from the suburbs of Madrid, compete in div 2a, and a couple of seasons ago knocked out the mighty Real Madrid from the Copa del Rey. So it was no surprise when they showed their class, romping to a 5-0 victory, having been 4-0 up at half time.

Torry’s side consisted of many trialists, with keeper Oscar, and Jorge, the only recognised players in the starting line up. For the 2nd half, Oscar was replaced by Marcos, whilst Alexis, Burguillos and Mati joined Jorge in the action.

But back to Saturday’s match. Torry’s starting XI was predicable, with only Martin missing out through injury: Oscar, Vicente, Adrian, Alexis, Jorge, Burguillos, Cristian, Borja, Carrasco, Rafa Gomez, Sergi. Played in front of a goodly sized crowd, swelled by holiday makers, Torry started the brightest.

On 15 mins, Rafa Gomez shot across the face of goal, but Carrasco just failed to put the finishing point blank touch required to open the scoring. Cristian Sanchez put in a great effort from the edge of the box, which went agonizingly the wrong side of the far post, as Torry continued to create chances. Sergi became the first booking, when he broke up a promising Elche assault on goal, then on the stroke of half time, Rafa Gomez appeared to be upended inside the box, but the Alicante based ref was having none of it!!

The 2nd half belonged to Elche, especially their substitute Rubio. He seemed certain to score on 51 mins, but a late flag for offside denied him the chance. Carrasco appeared to head home against the run of play, but once again, an eagle eyed linesman’s flag ruled the effort null and void. Rubio was again in the thick of the action on 65 mins, but his well struck shot was well saved by sub keeper Marcos, low down at his near post.

Elche started to get a bit over physical, especially on the superb Carrasco, and justly deserved 2 bookings in quick succession. Cesar, another Elche sub, crossed to the far post, only for Rubio to see his goal bound effort deflected for a corner. All in all, a 0-0 draw was a fair result, with both sides gaining many positives from the run out. I was disappointed to see Elche adopt an over physical approach, culminating in 2 Torry players, including Jorge, limping off the pitch.

Next Saturday 2 August, ko 8pm, Torry are again at Vicente Garcia Stadium, when they entertain div 2b side FC Cartagena, in another pre season friendly. VAMOS TORRY.
