Over the last four weeks a group of volunteers has been cleaning the area between the New River and the Old River (La Gola), near to the mouth of the River Segura in Guardamar.
The group began their efforts on July 15 collecting all kinds of plastic containers that have been abandoned by visitors to the area, in total, recovering enough to fill 150 large plastic sacks.
Councillor Jesus Huertas said that the cleanup will continue during the coming days "with a view to further contributing to the local environment and by educating visitors about the conservation of this area close to the river. We will ask them to take away and dispose of their waste containers more sensibly. We also want to convey the same message about local environmental issues to the younger element of our society."
The workers will be strengthened this week with a patrol of environmental volunteers in the coming days, who will provide this natural area with a much better look
Huertas said that “such actions contribute toward a more sensitive environment around a town that advocates green areas and the protection of its natural resources."
