A 90 year old man fatally stabbed his 86 year old wife on Monday in El Campello before committing suicide by slitting his own throat with the same kitchen knife that he had used to kill his wife. Both bodies were found in their 16th floor apartment by a daughter.
Although the circumstances surrounding the deaths is not yet known it is reported that the investigating officers are attributing the crime as an act of domestic violence. If this is confirmed the woman will become the 4th victim to have been killed in this way during 2014.
The upsetting event occurred at about eleven thirty at night in la urbanización Pinada Luceros de El Campello. The couple, Hilario PA, 90 aged , and UC Esperanza, 87, are both Spanish nationals who originate from Zaragoza, however they are said to have been spending the summer in the town with their daughter.
Neighbours reported no unusual noise or disturbances during the evening although a police spokesman said the woman allegedly murdered by her husband had previously denounced him for mistreatment. The bodies were both removed to the Anatomical Forensic Institute for where they will undergo autopsies in the hope that medical examiners will be able to shed some light on the circumstances of the two deaths.
As more facts gradually came to light the deputy Minister of Alicante, Alberto Martinez, said that "at first one might think it was a suicide pact between them, but apparently, it was the husband who attacked the woman and then took his own life. "
The Minister of Health, Social Services and Equality, Ana Mato, appealed to the whole of society to report cases of such violence against women and stressed the importance of addressing any signs of abuse.
