Dressed in the costume of black and gray huertano blouses and pants, many residents of Daya Vieja paraded through the town

For many centuries residents of Daya have dressed in traditional Huertano costume and walked through the town on 1 September playing music and generally enjoying themselves in an activity that mixes music, and gastronomy, in honor of the Virgin of Monserrate.

Last week the event took especial significance as, dressed in the costume of black and gray huertano blouses and pants, many residents of Daya Vieja paraded through the town collecting gifts and donations that will be put toward the cost of providing for those less fortunate residents.

The festive events, have become one of the most fun and anticipated activities and as more and more expatriates settle in the town, Councilor for festivities, Jose Angel Lorenzo, said "many international residents are now also joining in this traditional activity."

Many restaurant owners and residents donated animals including rabbits and chickens which will be sold to raise money, while those who were not in a position to provide livestock made financial contributions instead.

This activity meets each year to local residents of different ages and even nationalities because as indicated by the councilman Festival, Jose Angel Lorenzo, "some international residents do not hesitate to join this traditional activity."

Throughout the morning the group, who are accompanied by a flautist and a drum, walk through the entire town asking for the donations from the residents.

They are followed by a handcart pulled by a donkey which was also donated a few years, in which they pile their contributions.

Donations vary enormously and obviously, in these times of crisis, there are those who can afford hardly anything. But Lorenzo said that everybody makes an effort which demonstrates the unity of all the residents in the small town.
