Festival of Carthaginians and Romans

All of this week, the historic city of Cartagena is transformed to represent another time, another world, another and more sinister places, as the annual Romans against Carthaginians battle is recreated.

Cartagena has a history of three thousand years and, immediately as the summer comes to a close, the festival begins. To relive the history of the city, the Festival of Carthaginians and Romans evokes various official events from the Second Punic War: the causes of conflict between the Carthaginian and Roman powers, the beginning of the conflict and its outcome.

Cartagena is a unique city and one worth visiting any time of year, even with its modern military history, and an encyclopaedic past, it also offers a variety of shops, small and large, including El Corte Inglés, and a variety of bars and restaurants to suit all tastes.

If you haven´t visited yet, then this is perhaps the best time to do so, as this event is quite unique and offers an alternative to the Moors and Christians, Medieval markets and other such festivals offered in most places.

The events run for a whole week, but as we get towards the weekend, the action gets even more intense. A full guide is available from the tourist information offices, but here are some of our highlights that we think fall into the “not to be missed” category.
