ICONIC WATER PIPES SUFFER SECOND BURST

Just a month after thousands of litres of water burst out from the Tajo-Segura water pipes in Orihuela, another burst this week has amplified the problem as thousands more litres spewed out from a second burst.

Neighbours living near to the pipe noticed a loud noise that was unexplainable at the time, and so many of them left their homes to investigate. Once outside, it became clear what the problem was, as a huge spout of water could be seen from all around, gushing from the pipes.

Within minutes, the surrounding land had flooded, with plants, vegetables and flowers drowned under the deluge which also threatened the nearby homes.

With reports made to the local police, attempts to rectify the leak were problematic on account of the waterlogged ground underneath, around half of which is live agricultural land growing such crops as broccoli.

Residents have been critical of the lack of action in repairing the damage this time, especially given the burst a month ago and the apparent condition of the entire line of piping. One resident even reporting how the location of this burst was checked by inspectors after the last flood, but they did nothing to repair it, even though water could be seen trickling out of seemingly weakened connectors.
