Crime fell by 3.7% on the first three months of last year. The overall downward trend posted in recent years has continued, with crime now standing at 44.3 offences and misdemeanours per 1,000 inhabitants – one of the lowest rates in the European Union.
The Ministry of Home Affairs presents the Crime Statistics corresponding to the first quarter of 2015. This report contains and presents statistics on crime trends in the first three months of the year in Spain as registered by the State law enforcement agencies (the Spanish National Police Force and Spanish Guardia Civil), the regional law enforcement agencies (the Basque Ertzaintza, the Catalan Mossos d’Esquadra and the Provincial Police Force of Navarre), as well as those local police forces that provide data to the Crime Statistics System.
Between January and March 2015, a total of 496,133 offences and misdemeanours were recorded in Spain. This is 3.7% fewer than in the same period of 2014, when a total of 514,930 were recorded. The total number of registered criminal offences in the first three months of the year puts the crime rate at 44.3 offences and misdemeanours per 1,000 inhabitants, making Spain one of the safest countries within its peer group.
The total reduction in offences and misdemeanours recorded by the State law enforcement agencies in the first quarter of 2015, as reflected in the results presented by these statistics, confirms and highlights the ongoing downward trend posted in recent years. Spain continues to be an international benchmark in the fight against crime. It should be stressed that the efficient use of policing resources constitutes one of the main tools for preventing, combating and reducing crime rates in Spain.
The drop in crime rates was seen across the board, although the fall was greatest in terms of voluntary manslaughter and murder (-25%), aggravated burglary (-15.9%), aggravated robbery and robbery with intimidation (-15.5%), violent crime in general (-14%) and armed robbery (-12.2%).
Finally, it is worth highlighting – from a regional crime distribution perspective – that those regions posting the greatest crime reduction include La Rioja, Asturias and Cantabria.
Increasingly complete and accessible statistics
The Quarterly Crime Statistics provide a summary that breaks down the data on those criminal offences – serious offences and misdemeanours – registered not only at a national level but also broken down by autonomous region and province.
Furthermore, besides the detailed data of a regional nature, crime statistics on those provincial capitals and cities with a population of over 50,000 inhabitants (as per the official electoral register kept by the Spanish National Statistics Institute at 1 January 2014) are also included – a total of 146, to be precise.
However, it should be noted that the information extracted from this report also contains data corresponding to the island regions based on the guidelines – set last year – for the expansion of crime statistics published by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Specifically, those corresponding to Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Gomera, El Hierro, La Palma, Tenerife, Ibiza, Formentera, Majorca and Minorca.
The safety indicators used in this document comprise various categories: total number of serious offences and misdemeanours; voluntary manslaughter and murder; violent crime; aggravated robbery and robbery with intimidation; armed robbery; aggravated burglary; vehicle theft; drug trafficking; criminal damage; and theft.
A number of these crime indicators, basically those shown with the letters "EU" in brackets, correspond to those used by the European Union Statistics Office (EUROSTAT).
