Local campaign group, Vertivega, are calling for the closure of the Abanilla Proambiente landfill because of the illegal actions that are allegedly being carried out by staff employed at the site. They say that waste is being dumped in areas that have not been authorized for such use.
The group says that they warned of the illegal activities to Seprona, the environmental agency of the Guardia Civil, saying that the site authorities were landfilling in areas where they were not authorized to do so.
Their allegations were based on three reports that had been drawn up by Seprona in March following inspections made on the site, since which time the illegal dumping has been taking place.
Vertivega say that there has been a breach of the court order issued on July 19, 2012 and they call for an immediate cessation of all activity on the premises of the landfill whilst SEPRONA Carry out a full investigation.
Vertivega is an action group that was born three years ago from the indignation of citizens, associations and other organizations following suspicions of illegal activities carried out in the area of waste management which they say could have disastrous consequences for health, the economy and the environment of the Vega Baja del Segura.
