Environment al councillor Manuel Gallud said last week that 25 new recycling containers will be placed around Orihuela.
They are the first batch of 61 such bins provided by the company Ecoembes with the aim of increasing the volume of recycling in the city.
Gallud said that the recycling products deposited in the new bins will increase the money that the city receives from the company, currently in the region of 150,000 per year, derived from the use and reuse of these waste plastic containers
He spoke of the dual benefits of increased recycling, of course the benefits to the environment as well as an increased amount that the city will receive for packaging and paper, perhaps as much as 300,000 euros
Orihuela is currently well below the European average as far as public awareness of recycling is concerned so he appealed to the general public, asking that they now start to take rather more notice of their waste and that the start to separate it as is required, dropping it into the appropriate bin.
It is understood that the new containers will be distributed around the city, starting with the commercial areas that have the greatest needs. Gallud also said that this increase in revenue could even pose "a reduction in the cost of the refuse service, which he expects to remain under municipal ownership."
Each of the containers is costing about 600 euros.
