The seventh section of the Provincial Court based in Elche has shelved the case against the former mayor of Torrevieja, Pedro Hernández Mateo for the multimillion-euro sale of properties in Almoradí. The investigation was opened by the Anticorruption prosecutor, Felipe Briones, in May 2005, 16 years ago.

The Guardia Civil has arrested six people (three men and three women) as alleged perpetrators of a multitude of crimes against property, belonging to a criminal group and falsifying documents committed throughout the entire national geography and other European countries. Part of the group was specialised in the theft of ATMs, which started from their location using trucks with a platform – Those arrested were located in several illegally occupied homes in Orihuela Costa.

San Fulgencio Local Police have prevented two robberies in the municipality in recent days. The first took place last Wednesday when, after being alerted by a neighbour the officers found three men trying to break into a safe in the La Marina urbanisation. The officers prevented the theft, but the three men ran away leaving behind a backpack which has been handed to the Guardia Civil for investigation. The second incident was on Friday a commercial establishment in the area of Sector VIII of San Fulgencio, with the arrest of two individuals for an alleged crime of robbery with violence and intimidation.

The municipal group Sueña Torrevieja has presented a motion to the plenary session of the City Council, motivated by the fact that due to the situation generated by the pandemic, it has caused an increase in sedentary lifestyle in society, proposing the creation of urban hiking routes that link with different enclaves of the town, making the use of bicycles compatible with hiking. The aim is to promote the routes and their information corresponding to each one of them (distance, time, altitude, etc.), with the proposal for Torrevieja to join the Spanish Network of Healthy Cities.

The Palmeral de Orihuela will have a new area for visitors on a plot located next to the Interpretation Centre. The initiative has been presented this morning by the Councillor for the Environment, Dámaso Aparicio, who has announced that next Monday they will proceed to the signing of the reconsideration act and, from that moment, the execution period will be one month.

An agricultural worker died on Thursday when he was struck by lightning on a farm in Murcia. A colleague at Fuente Alamo alerted medics who attended the scene but could do nothing to save the 45-year-old man´s life.

A Loggerhead turtle was rescued from shallow waters of Tabarca Island after if got into difficulties. The animal has suffered an injury to one of its fins and was transferred to the municipal aquarium for monitoring.

Alicante town hall will be closing parts of Avenida Villajoyosa on Sundays throughout May and June to allow pedestrians and sports people space to move freely with social distancing without being affected by traffic.

World Taichi and Chi Kung Day will be celebrated in Torrevieja on Sunday with a class being held at the natural pool of Paseo Juan Aparicio opposite the Vela Centro Restaurant, at 10.30 am on Sunday, April 25.
