Torrevieja’s landmark Ice Factory complex—dating from the late 1920s and located within the historic Eras de la Sal salt-loading site—is set to undergo a major transformation under a newly signed renovation contract worth approximately €6.4 million, the project has been awarded to the Orthem‑Abala Torrevieja partnership, set to begin in the next few weeks.
Covering a total area of around 2,436 m², the restoration will preserve key architectural elements such as the original roofline, skylight and timber structure. It comprises two floors of the existing building and extends via a newly constructed annex (ground plus three storeys), connected by a covered corridor. Purpose-built features include a rooftop viewing platform offering panoramic views of the adjacent Sea & Salt Museum and Torrevieja Bay..
Funding is structured over three years: €1.59 million for 2025, €4.78 million for 2026, and around €797,000 in 2027. Part of the finance—some €2 million—is sourced from a municipal public-works loan and supported by contributions from the Generalitat Valenciana (totaling €5 million for the broader Eras de la Sal complex), alongside upcoming funds from the regional government’s building framework.
When complete—after approximately 18 months of construction—the enhanced venue will house Torrevieja’s main Tourist Office, the visitor’s reception area for the Sea & Salt Museum, municipal Tourism Department staff, an Innovation & Tourism Management Centre, and support services such as the International Residents Assistance and Migrant Offices.
