If you live in one of the urbanisations around Torrevieja, rather than the town centre, you might be surprised to hear that such a team exists, but the good news is that The Parks and Gardens Department in Torrevieja, managed by Actúa – Grupo Hozono Global, has debuted its official social media presence under the handle @jardinesdetorrevieja across Facebook, Instagram and X, and though, thanks to digital technology, those living in the outer areas will now be able to see flowers on their computer, so there is no need for them in real life where you live!
This new channel offers citizens a window into daily operations, with updates on activities such as pruning, planting, irrigation, pest control and specialised clean‑ups—even heightened efforts during heatwaves.
Alongside visual content, the profiles will feature educational posts on environmental stewardship, gardening advice, guidelines for respecting public green spaces and timely community announcements. The initiative is designed to foster a more interactive and transparent relationship between the municipality and its residents, encouraging involvement in maintaining Torrevieja’s urban biodiversity.
Under the revamped maintenance contract, the service now employs 113 professionals, up from 59, and operates a fleet of 68 vehicles and machines, replacing the previous 25-unit stock, although there is no mention of the environmental impact the increase in vehicle fleet will pose.
They currently oversee 362 public sites—including parks, plazas, playgrounds and sports areas—covering over 2 million square metres, an increase of 800,000 m² since the previous service model.
By improving both staffing and equipment, and expanding its coverage area, the service is able to deliver more timely interventions and apply modern standards of accessibility, safety and sustainability. Locals are encouraged to engage with and support this initiative by following the new channels and sharing their own experiences of the city’s green spaces, and so it could be an opportunity for those living in the urbanisations to share their pictures of brown and yellow spaces too, along with directions to help the town hall officials find their way beyond the N-332. You can also play a fun game with children, called “spot the tree”, as Torrevieja currently seems to have an objection to trees, and the environmental benefits they produce, favouring concrete.
Let us Monitor Progress
Below are 2 images taken exactly TWENTY YEARS apart, in the same location, in December 2004 and 2024, respectively, in one of the urbanisations (yes, we COULD name it, but for now we will give the town hall the challenge, with the clue (now, don’t get scared council people), it is over the other side of the N-332, where people live).
In fairness, it was greener in the picture than it is now, as it was December, but yes, the more observant will notice the road signs have never been changed, and whoever wrote their name or “tag” on the electric box might go down in history when future generations see it in the same way we see cave art, but the park area out of site is a mess, as is the one at the other end of the street.
So, we will leave this picture here, and then, in December 2025, we will return and give an update, to mark the 21st anniversary, and see if anyone has been able to find it and improve it in the same way the town centre is being.
