Torrevieja’s Socialist Party (PSOE) has sharply criticised the Partido Popular (PP) for slashing financial support to the city under the Plan +Cerca programme, administered by the Alicante Provincial Council.
According to the PSOE, funding for Torrevieja in the latest round of allocations has been reduced by more than €292,000 compared to last year. This follows a previous cut of over €211,000 in 2023, meaning the municipality has lost more than half a million euros in just two years under the current PP-led provincial government.
Socialist councillors argue that these continued reductions are becoming the norm, and accuse the PP of deliberately weakening local councils through arbitrary decisions that directly impact residents. The funds in question are typically used to address essential needs and to deliver local development projects.
In a statement, the PSOE called on Mayor Eduardo Dolón to defend Torrevieja’s interests, stating: “It is time for the mayor to stand up to his own party and protect this city from yet another damaging budget cut.”
The party also condemned what it described as a broader economic model from the PP that “suffocates municipalities while favouring the few.” They pointed to a pattern of tax breaks for wealthier individuals and leniency towards large corporations, contrasting this with financial pressure on local councils.
“The people of Torrevieja deserve fair funding that allows our town to move forward, not backwards,” the statement concluded. “We say enough is enough.”
