The school community in Alcoy is in disbelief after hearing of an incident at a secondary school that has never happened before. A mother and her child have been arrested for allegedly attacking a teacher at the school. Sources close to the case say that the teacher lost part of an ear because of the punches he sustained.
The people who were arrested are direct relatives of a student at the school where the victim works. The event happened on school grounds, which made other teachers and families quite angry.
The Ministry’s response and the emergency plan
Sources have been told by the Regional Ministry of Education that the policy for protecting the educational community would be put into action right away. STEPV says that the teachers are “defenceless”
The STEPV union has released a statement expressing total condemnation, saying that this is not an isolated incidence. The organisation said that “teachers feel more exposed and defenceless in extreme situations.” They linked the rise in attacks to two main factors: reduction in educational resources and the rise of hate speech that makes violence seem less serious.
The union has officially asked for a special meeting of the sector to talk about school safety. STEPV says that it is “essential” to give instructors more power and make the school environment better in order to stop schools from becoming places where people are physically and verbally aggressive.
