Two men aged 30 and 34 have been arrested on drug trafficking and other charges following a dangerous high-speed pursuit through the Villamartín and La Zenia areas on the Orihuela Costa. The incident, which took place on Monday, 18th May at around 11:30 am, culminated in a head-on collision between the suspects’ getaway car and an official Guardia Civil vehicle. One officer sustained injuries in the crash, requiring treatment from emergency medical services before being transferred to a local hospital.
The incident began when a patrol from the Torrevieja Citizen Security Unit (USECIC) spotted a vehicle failing to yield at a roundabout. When officers attempted to signal the car to pull over to identify the occupants, the driver ignored the commands and accelerated away at high speed.
During the ensuing chase, the vehicle performed highly reckless manoeuvres across several busy streets in the area. According to the Guardia Civil, the car was driven onto pavements, forcing pedestrians and other motorists to quickly scramble out of the way to avoid being run over or struck.
The pursuit continued until it reached the outskirts of La Zenia, where multiple police units moved in to block the path of the vehicle due to the imminent danger posed to public safety. At this point, the fleeing car crashed head-on into a clearly marked Guardia Civil vehicle.
The two occupants were immediately arrested on the scene. Following a search of the vehicle to determine why they had fled, officers discovered 1.5 kilograms of marijuana buds alongside a small quantity of hashish. The two suspects, who escaped the collision unharmed, were taken to a hospital for a routine medical check before being handed over to the judicial authorities.
They face charges of offences against public health for drug trafficking, as well as driving offences and a lack of cooperation with the authorities.
