A 76-year-old German woman has died in Javea after suffering a serious accident involving the adapted lift she used to access her home.
The victim became trapped with her wheelchair in the mechanism of the lift, which was installed on the exterior of the villa. The property is located on a sloping plot on the slopes of Montgo.
According to emergency sources, the woman was returning home in an adapted taxi after eating at a restaurant in the municipality. To enter the property, she needed to use a stairlift elevator, as the entrance has around forty steps and the victim had reduced mobility.
For reasons that are now being investigated by the Guardia Civil, the wheelchair accidentally became trapped whilst the platform was still in operation. The system failed to stop, and the woman suffered several blows against the facade of the house until the lift reached the top section.
It was neighbours who raised the alarm after hearing the screams of the victim. Local Police, SAMU paramedics, firefighters, the Red Cross, and the Guardia Civil all rushed to the scene. However, medical services could only confirm her death.
The body was transferred for a judicial autopsy. The investigation is now trying to clarify the operation of the lift and determine if there was a technical or mechanical failure in the system, which the victim used regularly. The woman had lived in this Marina Alta municipality for years.
