Six people were trapped for around an hour in an underground car park lift on the very first official day of the Hogueras de Alicante festival. Firefighters from the Alicante City Council Fire Prevention, Extinction and Rescue Service (Speis) were called out to intervene and free the occupants after the lift suffered a breakdown.
The incident took place at around 10:00 a.m. today, Saturday 20th June, in a car park situated on Calle López Osaba, right next to the Provincial Archaeological Museum of Alicante (MARQ). While the rescue operation unfolded, several worried witnesses watched from outside and noted that the intense heat made the rescue more difficult. “Thank goodness they had fans,” one bystander remarked after rescuers had safely freed the occupants.
