Elche General Hospital has taken part in the development and validation of MedulAI, an artificial intelligence tool designed to assist in diagnosing haematological diseases through the analysis of bone marrow samples.
The hospital in Elche is the first public hospital in the Valencian Community to join this project, in which a total of 14 Spanish hospitals are participating to validate the technology before its future incorporation into clinical practice.
The head of the hospital’s Haematology Service, Venancio Conesa, explained that Elche General Hospital performs around 400 bone marrow studies each year, making the facility an ideal setting for developing this new technology.
Once the validation process is complete, the system will allow bone marrow samples to be digitalised and analysed using artificial intelligence algorithms. This converts conventional microscopes into digital microscopes capable of capturing high-quality haematological images and automatically identifying the different cells present in a sample.
Previous studies conducted during the development of this technology suggest that such tools could significantly reduce the time spent on morphological sample analysis, decrease diagnostic variability, and improve analytical precision. The validation currently taking place in participating hospitals will serve to confirm these findings.
