Benidorm City Council is set to launch a pilot scheme to test the future European Digital Identity Wallet, known as the EUDI Wallet, across several hotel establishments in the city. The initiative aims to evaluate its practical application in hotel procedures, including guest registration.
Promoted by BeCiTi, the project will be developed by Swiss technology firm SICPA, whose proposal was selected during the centre’s Second Open Innovation Challenge. According to the municipality, the proof of concept will examine in a real-world setting how the future European Digital Identity can be integrated into standard hotel operations. This aims to streamline procedures, cut down waiting times and simplify administrative tasks, all while ensuring guests retain full control over their personal data.
Aida García Mayor, the Councillor for Innovation, noted that the challenge launched last May sought to identify innovative solutions to enhance key hotel sector processes, focusing this second edition on the potential of the EUDI Wallet.
The project will also feature collaboration from Visit Benidorm and HOSBEC to select the participating hotel establishments and validate the specific use cases created throughout the trial.
Promoted by the EU and currently under development, the European Digital Identity Wallet will allow citizens to securely verify their identity to access both public and private services, sharing only required information and completing digital procedures with enhanced security. Through this pilot scheme, Benidorm aims to strengthen its collaborative strategy with technology companies and the tourism sector, driving digital transformation across the destination and testing innovative solutions prior to wider implementation.
