Eleven people have lost their lives in as many fatal traffic accidents, four of them motorcyclists, since the start of the second summer holiday exodus, from last Friday at 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. yesterday, Sunday 2nd August.
According to sources from the Directorate General of Traffic Saturday was the deadliest day on Spanish roads with eight fatalities in as many accidents, three of them motorcyclists, and two injured.
So far on Sunday, and up to 8:00 p.m. – the special operation concludes at midnight – two more people have died in separate accidents, and one of the deceased was a motorcyclist, while on Friday there was a single fatal accident with one death and two injuries.
The two people who died this Sunday were a 26-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman, who lost their lives in two different accidents in the province of Toledo.
As for the state of the roads, this afternoon the access routes to the main cities began to get complicated, due to the coincidence of the weekend with the return operation of the first holiday exodus of July.
An accident in Guadalajara was causing traffic problems on the A-2 in Alcolea del Pinar towards Madrid, while there was slow traffic on the A-1 at the Jarama circuit and on the A-5 in Toledo near Calypo Fado, both heading towards the capital. Additionally, there were some roadworks on the A-6 in Arevalo, also heading towards Madrid.
In Barcelona there was also some traffic congestion on the A-2 in Jorba, as well as in Cuenca on the A-3 in Minglanilla towards Valencia and in Malaga, on the A-45 in Villanueva de Cauche, towards Granada, and on the A-7 in Fuengirola towards the Malaga capital.
In this second special operation of summer 2026, which coincides with the start of the August holidays and the return of those who took them in July, 5.6 million journeys are expected on Spanish roads.
