The regional government, the Consell, has approved a decree creating the Eras de la Sal Secondary Education Institute (IES) in Torrevieja by converting the current secondary education branch of IES Torrevigía into an independent school.
Town Hall sources stated that this key decision will allow the centre to operate with its own organisational and management structure, strengthening public education across the municipality. For the upcoming 2026/2027 academic year, IES Eras de la Sal will provide 22 Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) classes and two Baccalaureate classes.
Once the construction of its permanent building is complete, the new institute will feature 32 classes in total, comprising 24 ESO and eight Baccalaureate units. The facility will reach a capacity of 1,000 students, offering 720 places dedicated to ESO and 280 to Baccalaureate studies.
The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, welcomed the decision, describing it as news of huge importance that officially acknowledges the growth of the centre and grants it full autonomy to function independently. Dolón explained that Torrevieja is one of the fastest-growing cities demographically in the region, enrolling a high number of late-arriving pupils throughout each academic year.
According to figures highlighted by the mayor, student numbers in Torrevieja have risen from 10,597 in 2019 to more than 17,000 today. Dolón praised the ongoing collaboration between the local council and the regional government, confirming that municipal land and resources will continue to be made available to accelerate the construction of new educational facilities.
