National Police officers in Alicante have arrested five members of the same family for their suspected involvement in the stabbing of a 47-year-old man on Wednesday, 28th October, in the Juan XXIII Segundo Sector neighbourhood. The attack, which left the victim seriously injured, stemmed from a traffic dispute over a parked motorcycle that was blocking the path of a van. The suspects, aged between 19 and 66, turned themselves in voluntarily on Friday at the Provincial Police Station in Alicante and were brought before the judicial authorities the following day.
The five detainees, defended by lawyer Aitor Esteban Gallastegui, are being investigated as suspected perpetrators of attempted homicide. Following their appearance before the judicial authority, four of them were released, while provisional detention was ordered for the fifth suspect, despite him denying that he was the person who delivered the stab wound.
The investigation, handled by the Violent Crime Group (UDEV) of the Provincial Judicial Police Brigade of Alicante, has clarified the circumstances surrounding the clash, which took place in broad daylight in Pasaje Poeta Balart, at the entrance to the building where the injured man lives.
According to the account given to investigators by the victim’s wife, the incident began when she was at home and heard several people complaining about a motorcycle belonging to her husband. The two-wheeled vehicle was parked in a spot that apparently made it difficult for a van to pass. The van was driven by some of the individuals later arrested, who work as street vendors.
The woman went down to the street to speak with those involved and try to resolve the issue. However, according to her statement to the police, the response she received was to be quiet because women do not have to speak, as those are men’s matters.
Shortly afterwards, her 47-year-old husband also went downstairs to inform those present that he was going to move the motorcycle to allow the van to pass. Rather than ending the incident, the man was heckled, and a confrontation broke out that culminated in a violent assault.
According to the version gathered during the investigation, the victim was first punched and subsequently stabbed in the back, causing serious injuries.
Following the assault, while awaiting the arrival of health services, one of the individuals involved offered to take the injured man to a hospital. However, the victim declined the offer and preferred to wait for an ambulance.
Emergency services received the report of the stabbing shortly before half past two on Wednesday afternoon. Patrols from the National Police and the Local Police of Alicante rushed to Pasaje Poeta Balart, alongside an ambulance that treated the injured man.
The man remained conscious when he was assisted by medical staff and was subsequently evacuated to the Hospital de Sant Joan d’Alacant. His condition was serious, and according to initial reports following the incident, he was scheduled to undergo surgery.
The victim was able to provide officers with information regarding the people who took part in the attack. Specifically, he stated that he knew his alleged assailants and that they lived in the building next to his, a detail that helped guide the initial police enquiries.
From the outset, UDEV investigators focused their efforts on identifying both the person who dealt the knife blow and the rest of the individuals who took part in the confrontation.
The enquiries led to the arrest on Friday of five people from the same family, aged between 19 and 66, who went voluntarily to the Provincial Police Station.
Four of the arrestees were brought before the courts on Saturday for their suspected involvement in a crime of attempted homicide, while the fifth was released after appearing at the police station. Following statements, the judicial authority ordered one suspect to be remanded in provisional custody and released the rest.
The individual now imprisoned denied being the person who stabbed the victim, although the court ordered his imprisonment as part of the ongoing proceedings opened over the events.
