A routine traffic check by the Orihuela Local Police has ended with a chase, an officer run over and an arrest.
The incident occurred during a police checkpoint on Calle Isla Ibiza on the Orihuela Costa, when officers signalled a vehicle to stop to check its documentation. As the driver handed it over, he suddenly accelerated, running over one of the officers’ feet, before fleeing the scene.
It was then that a chase began in which several patrol cars tried to catch the fleeing car until its occupants abandoned the vehicle next to an open field to continue the escape on foot.
After an intense chase, the officers managed to catch and arrest one of those involved.
The detainee is accused of alleged crimes of assaulting law enforcement officers, reckless driving, and driving without a licence, in accordance with Article 384 of the Penal Code, as reported by the police force on its social media accounts. The force regularly shares reports of its interventions in checkpoints that often end in surprising incidents, such as last August when a Local Police car from Orihuela was involved in a serious accident on the N-332 shortly before the Punta Prima roundabout. The patrol signalled a vehicle to stop, but it fled, and during the pursuit, the accident occurred in which the police vehicle sustained significant damage and came to rest on the side of the road.
