A mother experienced a scene of genuine panic on Monday afternoon on Postiguet beach in Alicante when she discovered a man entering the water with her four-year-old daughter. The woman ran towards the sea, struggled with him and managed to recover the little girl before two suspects were arrested by the Local Police.
The events occurred around 5:15 p.m. on Monday, 3rd August, when a Russian woman was enjoying the afternoon with her two daughters, aged 4 and 12, and a friend on Postiguet beach. Two Moroccan citizens in their 30s had been loitering around the area where the family was located for some time. At one point, according to testimonies gathered, one of them grabbed the four-year-old girl and began to pull her into the water. A few metres away, the second individual was waiting, still in the sea.
The mother immediately realised what was happening and reacted without hesitation. She quickly entered the water and managed to rescue the little girl after struggling with the suspect. After the incident, the two men did not leave the beach on the sand, but continued moving through the water to try to get away from the scene.
The mother immediately alerted the Local Police officers who were on patrol at Postiguet beach. The officers located both suspects still in the water and waited for them to come out of the sea before intercepting and arresting them.
While the police operation was underway, a Serbian woman approached the officers after recognising the two men who had been arrested. She stated that they had followed her minutes earlier while she was bathing, and one of them had allegedly tried to sexually assault her. This new testimony was incorporated into the investigation opened to clarify what happened during the afternoon on the central Alicante beach.
The two men were arrested and placed at the disposal of the National Police, who have taken charge of the proceedings.
The incident has once again placed Postiguet beach at the centre of the debate about safety during peak season. Just a few weeks ago, three men were arrested for separate sexual assaults that occurred on this same beach within a few days. Among those incidents were alleged abuses and groping committed both on the sand and in the water, generating considerable concern among residents and regular beach users. The recurrence of these types of incidents in a short period of time has reopened the debate on the need for a possible reinforcement of surveillance on Alicante’s main urban beach, especially during the months with the highest influx of bathers.
