A man has been arrested in Torrevieja after being caught carrying a firearm in a public place by the Guardia Civil. The operation began during a routine patrol and also resulted in the seizure of ammunition and allegedly falsified documents, as the arrested man lacked any type of licence to possess or carry firearms.
The incident occurred last month when a patrol from the Torrevieja Main Station’s Public Safety unit was carrying out preventative patrols in the streets of Torrevieja. During their patrol, the officers observed two men who, upon noticing the police presence, changed their demeanour and attempted to leave the area, prompting officers to identify them.
During the intervention, one of the men displayed, according to the Alicante Command Press Office, a marked state of nervousness while searching for his identification in a shoulder bag he was wearing. Given this behaviour, and for security reasons, the officers inspected the bag, locating a semiautomatic pistol.
The weapon had a magazine with thirteen rounds and another loaded in the chamber, so it was ready for immediate use. Furthermore, part of the serial number had been removed, making identification difficult.
Subsequent checks, carried out by the investigation unit of the Guardia Civil in Torrevieja, confirmed that both individuals had prior records of illegal possession of weapons and membership in a criminal group.
The officers obtained information about a residence linked to one of the suspects, and a search warrant was executed at the address. During the search, a second magazine with ammunition and a suspected counterfeit foreign identity card were seized. One of the suspects was released after his identity was verified, although he remains under investigation.
The main detainee was placed at the disposal of the Instruction Section of the Court of First Instance of Torrevieja as the alleged perpetrator of the crimes of illegal possession of weapons, falsification of documents and belonging to a criminal organisation. The action forms part of preventive services to combat organised crime.
