A proposal to build a circular tramway around the perimeter of the Mar Menor and La Manga has been put forward as a key project to drive transport integration and economic development in that region.
Ángel Martínez, former president of the Murcia Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Navigation and the Regional Council of Chambers, emphasised the strategic importance of revitalising infrastructure around this unique natural coastal area. Under the initiative, the circular tram route would encircle the entire Mar Menor lagoon and extend along the La Manga peninsula.
The project aims to unify public transport across the surrounding municipalities while offering a seamless connection to the FEVE narrow-gauge railway line linking Cartagena and the Mar Menor area. By linking these transit networks, local authorities, the regional government, and central government could improve everyday mobility for residents and visitors alike.
Proponents highlight that a dedicated light rail system would help alleviate traffic bottlenecks and resolve the traditional dead-end accessibility challenges facing La Manga. Beyond providing a sustainable transit option, the route is intended to enhance tourist appeal by enabling passengers to enjoy scenic views of both the lagoon and the Mediterranean Sea.
Supporters argue that investing in modern transport links around the Mar Menor is essential for supporting sustainable growth, boosting hotel capacity, and establishing long-term economic stability across local coastal communities.
