National Police officers in Denia have arrested a man and a woman, aged 23 and 24, suspected of carrying out thefts using the “affectionate hug” technique. The pair were part of an itinerant, transnational criminal ring that specialised in stealing high-value jewellery and watches from elderly individuals.
The investigation began following a series of reports regarding affectionate hug thefts in Denia since the beginning of the summer. Officers noted a common pattern, as the incidents took place in supermarket car parks near the victims’ vehicles, typically around mid-morning.
Victims reported that a young woman approached them in the car park, distracted them with hugs and caresses, and then fled quickly in a vehicle. Shortly afterwards, the victims noticed that someone had stolen the jewellery or watches they were wearing.
Police enquiries revealed that the suspects belonged to an itinerant criminal network with high geographical mobility, travelling continuously between different cities and countries. These groups usually consist of two or three people, often two women and a man. The male driver stays inside the vehicle to keep watch and guarantee a quick escape while the women carry out the thefts.
Following police surveillance and tracking, officers located and arrested the couple. Both detainees have been handed over to the duty court in Denia.
