A cleaner employed at the CAMP Santa Faz public care facility for people with intellectual disabilities in Alicante was arrested by the National Police last Sunday following an alleged sexual assault on a female resident. The 59-year-old suspect was granted provisional release after appearing in court on Monday.
The incident was reported after another member of staff caught the employee in a bedroom allegedly groping one of the residents, a woman with a 75 per cent intellectual disability.
According to the complaint, the care worker entered a bedroom mid-morning, which shares a bathroom with another room, to assist a resident. As the door to the adjoining room was open, she saw the cleaner standing next to the woman, touching her intimate parts with one hand while using the other hand to masturbate.
When his colleague caught him, the man fled the room hurriedly without speaking.
The employee immediately reported the incident to the director of CAMP Santa Faz, who instructed her to contact the National Police.
Officers from the Citizen Security Brigade arrived at the facility at around 3 pm. The care assistant who witnessed the event provided details to the police and stated that she wished to press charges on behalf of the victim, who cannot comprehend what happened due to her 75 per cent intellectual disability. The worker told officers that the cleaner should not have been on that floor and described finding him touching the resident with her dress pulled up while standing close against her.
The report led to the employee’s arrest on Sunday. He was brought before a judge the following day and granted provisional release while the investigation continues at an instruction court.
The Regional Department of Social Services, which oversees CAMP Santa Faz, confirmed that the incident was reported and is currently under investigation. The department noted that established protocols to protect the resident were activated immediately, including precautionary restraining measures to prevent any contact with the worker under investigation.
