Aena has initiated the process to acquire the land needed to build a new General Aviation building and boarding pier at the Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández airport. The action involves expropriating more than 88,000 square metres of land in Elche.
The intervention affects 25 parcels of land, including public communication pathways owned by the Elche Town Council and a car rental company. The expansion is required because increased air traffic has created a need for more space within the terminal to handle security processes and comply with European regulations.
The new boarding pier, designated for travellers arriving from outside the Schengen area, will occupy the space of the closed T-1 building and extend to the current General Aviation facility. Property owners have a period of 15 working days to present allegations, while the purchase and completion of the land acquisition could take at least a year.
The airport expansion falls under the DORA III framework for the 2027 to 2031 period, which includes broader improvements to parking, roadways, and taxiways with an estimated overall investment of over 1 billion euros.
