Torrevieja Town Hall has approved the tender for comprehensive renovation and refitting works at the CEIP Virgen del Carmen school, with a base budget of 1,342,011 euro including VAT. The project will address several areas across the educational site, with one of the most critical tasks being the removal of fibre cement sheets located beneath the roof tiles.
The local governing board gave the green light on Friday to the procurement process for the project, which is fully funded by the Regional Government of Valencia through the Edificant Plan. Planned improvements feature the repair of sports courts and various safety interventions to eliminate hazard points in the infants’ playground. The contractors will also fix structural cracks identified in the main building, alongside restoring and repairing overhangs and eaves.
The roofing works represent a major element of the planned overhaul. Replacing the underlying fibre cement panels requires a specialised asbestos removal process, which must adhere strictly to established technical and safety protocols for handling hazardous materials.
Funding for the overhaul is being provided entirely by the Valencian regional authorities. Competences were initially delegated to Torrevieja in 2023 with an allocated budget of 1,237,425 euro. A subsequent decision by the Regional Ministry of Education, Culture and Universities on 7th May increased this allocation by an additional 186,085 euro, raising total delegated funding to 1,423,511 euro.
Councillor for Education, Ricardo Recuero, highlighted that the project enables a much-needed transformation of the school, targeting the roofs, sports facilities, playground, and structural elements to provide safer, better maintained, and more suitable facilities for pupils. Recuero added that launching the tender process marks a significant step forward in improving educational infrastructure across Torrevieja, reflecting effective coordination between the local council and regional government to address school needs.
