Compromís has launched its political season in Elche by highlighting the expenses of the PP-Vox coalition government, pointing specifically to hotel bills exceeding 800 euro per night during official travel. According to data released by the opposition coalition, a trip to Madrid by Mayor Pablo Ruz and councilwoman Irene Ruiz cost over 3,500 euro, while a single-night stay in Milan came to more than 4,300 euro.
Coalition spokesperson Esther Díez also estimated the cost of the mayor’s trip to China alongside councillor Samuel Ruiz at over 6,000 euro. Díez highlighted accommodation expenses for the head of Culture during a trip to Paris, which she claimed exceeded 800 euro per night. Additionally, the spokesperson pointed to approximately 3,800 euro linked to the recent Fitur fair, which was spent by Vox spokesperson Aurora Rodil, who ultimately did not attend the event.
Díez argued that these figures show municipal resources are being managed in a way that is far removed from the reality of everyday Elche residents. She linked the travel costs to other contested expenditure, including over 10,000 euro spent on breakfasts, roughly 12,000 euro on Tiffany chairs for the plenary hall, and an estimated increase of around one million euro for municipal advisors. She noted that these costs come whilst Elche City Council remains subject to an economic adjustment plan.
Looking ahead to the coming months, Compromís stressed that municipal policies should focus on housing access, public healthcare, education, social policies, and local infrastructure in Elche’s neighbourhoods and outlying districts. Díez also criticised the mayor for failing to claim approximately 43 million euro from the regional government for the UMH university land debt, stating that the opposition will continue to focus on local needs, urban planning tools, and the climate emergency.
