A 41-year-old man has been arrested by the National Police in Elche after allegedly faking his own kidnapping. The suspect claimed he was accosted while shopping, bundled into a vehicle with a hood over his head, and held captive, where he suffered assaults and minor cuts. He also stated that his captors forced him to call his partner to tell her he was in a police holding cell.
Specialised agents from the National Police’s UDEV launched an investigation into the serious allegations. Officers reviewed security camera footage from establishments the man claimed to have visited prior to his disappearance, discovering he never appeared at those locations during the specified times.
Instead, the investigation led officers to a hotel where they confirmed the man had voluntarily stayed during the period he claimed to be held against his will. Closed-circuit television footage and documentation showed him arriving alone, checking in, providing identification, and paying for his accommodation in cash.
The recordings also showed him wearing the same clothes he later wore to the police station and without the injuries he had mentioned in his report. Analysis of communications and a statement from his partner further contradicted his account. Once sufficient evidence was gathered proving the events were fabricated, National Police officers located and arrested him for falsely reporting a crime. Following the conclusion of the investigation, the individual has been released on bail after appearing before the duty judge in Elche for the crime of falsely reporting a crime.
