A minor earthquake was detected in the Torrevieja area in the early hours of this morning. The seismic event took place at 02:25 local time (00:25 UTC), registering a magnitude of 1.7 mbLg at a recorded depth of zero kilometres, with its epicentre situated just off east Torrevieja.
Whilst low-intensity tremors are a relatively common occurrence in this part of the Vega Baja, ground movements invariably draw attention to the area’s history. Much of Torrevieja was destroyed by a devastating earthquake in 1829, an event that remains deeply rooted in the town’s local consciousness.
Today’s tremor is also likely to heighten the unease of local residents who are currently campaigning against a newly approved development. Planning permission was recently granted for a new hotel in the municipality, and the continuing seismic activity provides further fuel for neighbours voicing concerns over ongoing development and ground stability.
