A court has ordered the preventive closed detention of a minor under investigation for assisting in steering a small boat carrying 26 migrants, on which three people died, off the coast of Cartagena.
The investigation indicates that the minor allegedly participated, from the coast of Algeria, in steering the vessel, which drifted at sea until it was rescued by Maritime Rescue services. The magistrate at court number 1 stated in the ruling that there are solid indications the minor assisted an adult in managing the boat.
Regarding the adult involved in the case, the Duty Instruction Section of the Cartagena Court of Instance ordered on Monday that he be placed in provisional remand without bail.
According to the official report, a total of 26 people were on board the intercepted boat, including a baby and another minor. The National Police carried out an investigation to verify testimonies provided by several passengers who stated that multiple deaths had occurred during the journey.
Following a complex investigation complicated by conflicting statements, officers confirmed that three individuals died during the sea crossing.
