Clocks in Spain and across European countries will go back by one hour tomorrow morning, marking the official end of daylight saving time and the arrival of winter time.
The adjustment will take place during the early hours from Saturday night into Sunday morning. On mainland Spain and in the Balearic Islands, when the clock reaches 03:00, hands will be turned back to 02:00. In the Canary Islands, where a different time zone is observed, the shift will occur at 02:00 local time, turning back to 01:00.
This biannual adjustment provides people with an extra hour of sleep over the weekend, although it results in shorter daylight hours during the afternoon as darkness falls earlier. Conversely, mornings will appear brighter following the time change.
Most modern internet-connected digital equipment, including smart mobile phones, laptops, and tablets, will update their displayed time automatically provided their automated time zone settings are enabled. However, traditional wall clocks, wristwatch devices, and household appliances such as ovens or vehicle dashboards will require manual updating to reflect the new time.
The practice of changing time across European Union member states is governed under shared regulations designed to align schedules across neighbouring regions. Summer time will resume again on the final Sunday of March.
