For many years, the butane cylinder has been an essential item in millions of Spanish homes. However, its usage has declined significantly in recent times because of the expansion of natural gas networks, household electrification, and the growth of renewable energy. Even so, 57 million LPG containers of various capacities were consumed in 2025, and the cylinder remains indispensable in vulnerable households, rural areas, and second homes. Consequently, many people wish to keep track of how its price is evolving.
It should be noted that the price is regulated by the Government and cannot rise or fall by more than 5%. The price is reviewed and published on the third Tuesday of every odd month. When calculating the figure, several factors come into play, including the cost of raw materials (propane and butane) on international markets, shipping rates, and the euro-dollar exchange rate.
In mid-September, the latest review took place, resulting in the highest price seen since 2022. According to representatives from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, this increase was due to an 8.24% rise in raw material costs, a 10.27% increase in maritime transport rates, and a 7.1% strengthening of the euro against the US currency.
As a result, a 12.5 kg LPG cylinder currently costs 18.84€. This represents a 5.66% increase, or 1.01€.
Looking towards the end of the financial year, the Bank of Spain warns that futures market quotes suggest prices will remain high, which will also impact the cost of the butane cylinder. The bank estimates that for the fourth quarter of the year, futures markets anticipate continued high prices for both electricity (141.4€/MWh) and gas (74.2€/MWh).
