Lifeguards in Torrevieja rescued a racing sailboat yesterday, Wednesday 9th September, that was adrift amid a storm while an orange alert for heavy rain and wind was in effect.
The alert was activated shortly after 5 p.m. when a resident of Ferrís called 112 to report a boat in distress. Lifeguards arrived by jet ski to assist the occupant, a German man in his late sixties, who had been in serious trouble for two hours because his mast had broken.
However, the jet ski could not bring the boat to shore because the southern coastline is rocky. Therefore, they towed it up to Cala Piteras, less than two kilometres away, where there is a lifeguard station. There, a lifeguard swam out to bring the boat and its occupant to the beach, where more lifeguards, a local police patrol and an ambulance were waiting. Ultimately, medical assistance was not needed, and it was all just a scare and a near-movie rescue that captured the attention of locals and onlookers on an afternoon when the weather was not ideal for walking or sailing.
