The dramatic incident unfolded in Denia when the eco-friendly vessel flipped over while anchored near the southern breakwater and the entrance of the port. Speculation immediately arose that the heavy wake from an incoming ferry might have caused the accident.
Emergency services launched a major operation involving maritime rescue and firefighters, fearing that travellers might have been trapped inside or drowned. Divers were sent down to search the waters but found no one inside.
The Finnish couple had arrived in Denia the previous night, anchored their boat near the breakwater, and taken a kayak to the dock before heading to a hotel to rest. They later realised their vessel had capsized and contacted the authorities, with the young man speaking to Maritime Rescue and his partner liaising with the Guardia Civil.
Confirmation that both individuals were safe brought an end to the rescue fears, leaving officials to focus on how to right and refloat the vessel before worsening weather arrives.
