Torrevieja City Council has announced that transfers on bus lines 1 and 2 in the Rocío del Mar and Los Balcones areas will be eliminated by the end of October. The governing team backtracked following numerous complaints from users after new Avanza bus lines were launched in late July, which previously forced passengers to change buses at the University Hospital stop to reach the centre of Torrevieja.
Transport Councillor Antonio Vidal made the announcement during the latest ordinary plenary session, noting that the Los Balcones route will revert to its previous layout. Vidal emphasised that these adjustments do not constitute a contract modification and will not alter the 20-minute bus frequency to the hospital from Avenida Gregorio Marañón.
The plenary session also addressed the approval of public transport new fares, ending 27 years of free travel for all registered residents. While a specific start date for the fares in October or November has not been finalised, many retired users and pensioners have already renewed their cards under the new format. The updated fare structure introduces a standard pass, a special multi-trip pass, and a 30-trip pass with a flat monthly rate. Discounts of up to 50% will be available for young people under 26, the unemployed, large families, and single-parent families with two children, while a gold pass will guarantee free transport for those over 65, pensioners, and people with disabilities. However, service management indicates that 80% of current free-service users will transition to paying for tickets.
