The second edition of the international Alicante-Elche marathon has been postponed after coinciding with the announcement of early general elections. The race, which was originally scheduled for Sunday 29th November, has been put on hold as the town councils of Alicante and Elche, alongside the Club Atlético Montemar organising body, work to find a new date for the event.
Organisers confirmed that the decision became necessary following the scheduling of the general elections for the same day. The inaugural edition of the event took place on 30 November of last year, drawing approximately 3,500 runners across a 42-kilometre course that started near the Palacio de Altamira in Elche and finished at Muelle 12 in the Port of Alicante.
For this second edition, alterations had been designed for the route to position it among the fastest marathons in Spain. The updated layout planned for the first 20 kilometres to run through the urban area of Elche, including a new section through El Palmeral, followed by 18 interurban kilometres leading runners towards Casa Mediterráneo in Alicante. The final four kilometres would have directed participants to the finish line located at the Plaza del Puerto, while removing the final eight kilometres of the previous year’s urban Alicante route due to the inclines athletes faced in that closing stretch.
Authorities and the organising club will communicate the new date for the Alicante-Elche marathon in due course.
