The Climatology Laboratory of the University of Alicante predicts that the upcoming weather system arriving in the province this weekend could bring up to 150 litres per square metre to parts of Alicante. The State Meteorological Agency indicates that this phenomenon will cause intense and persistent precipitation in areas of the Balearic Islands and along the peninsular Mediterranean coast.
According to official forecasts, the episode of heavy precipitation is likely to begin on Saturday. During the second half of the day, rainfall is expected to intensify and spread towards the Balearic archipelago and the Mediterranean facade. On Sunday, 18th October, although considerable uncertainty remains, the most probable scenario is that the most significant precipitation will occur in Mediterranean coastal and pre-coastal areas, where accumulated amounts could become relevant throughout the event.
Experts note that not all extreme precipitation is caused by such systems, even though the terminology often causes anxiety among the population. On the contrary, specialists from the university assure that these very phenomena help recharge local reservoirs and aquifers. Meanwhile, yellow weather alerts have been activated across regions of Alicante as authorities monitor the changing conditions.
