TAXED SINGER FINE REDUCED

The Tax Office has agreed to reduce the fine levied on opera singer Montserrat Caballé, after she was found guilty of defrauding the hacienda

Sources at the tax office report that it is normal to reduce the fine for fraud cases, if an agreement is reached with the guilty party to pay the money and refrain from future fraudulent activities.

Having been found guilty of tax evasion for 2010, when she was a permanent resident in Andorra, the singer immediately paid 300,000 euro to the tax office and immediately set about raising the remaining outstanding amount, which was paid a short time later.

However, despite paying the outstanding debt, the singer still faced a fine for tax evasion, and a potential prison sentence, but her prompt actions in repaying the tax has added to the mitigating circumstances that could lead to her paying an additional 250,000 euro, rather than the standard 65% of the defrauded amount, but an agreement would mean that the 81 year old singer would avoid going to prison.
