Grupo de Refuerzo Operativo in action

Six of the twenty local police officers involved in Torrevieja´s elite Grupo de Refuerzo Operativo, the task force who were left to deal with such problems as the plagues of “lookie lookie” men, have left the squad and returned to normal duties as they have not been adequately rewarded for their additional services, a spokesperson for the union representing the officers says that they have not been compensated for the extra time worked.

Formed in May 2012 with the support of the town´s mayor, Eduardo Dolón, the team have been in the headlines both for their attempts to deal with the tasks assigned to them, and for an apparent lack of support from the courts for dealing with those they arrest, and facing additional risks of riots and attacks in the city centre.

Most officers who joined the unit gave a commitment to provide maximum time of availability around the clock, as required, but budget constraints prevented overtime from being paid, and so they were compensated with the offer of days off in lieu.
