The Ministry of Culture has declared the Torre de la Ermita de La Marquesa de Los Montesinos as being of “Cultural Interest”, following a request made by the local council last year.
The building has been undergoing restoration during the last year, in order to preserve the site with a recorded history dating back to the eighteenth century, already securing the badge of “Site of Local Interest”, now firmly being recognised as a monument to the past with this new declaration, Bien de Interés Cultural.
The tower now joins other sites of cultural interest nearby, including the cisterns of Lo Vigo and La Marquesa, and the hydrographical water mill of Lo Reig, as well as the windmill of Molino de Los Corteses.
The tower itself contains the chapel bell, which was only discovered during restoration work last year, after the turret had been used as a watchtower for centuries, exercising defensive functions of shelter and protection of the inhabitants of the area.
The architectural ensemble of La Marquesa has always aroused the neighbouring interest and admiration, since it was one of the first population enclaves of what is now known as Los Montesinos.
Once the restoration project is completed, anticipated around the middle of this year, the Chapel will be officially opened by the Bishop of the Diócesis Orihuela-Alicante, Jesús Murgui.
