The National Police have arrested one of the UK´s most wanted criminals, David Paul Mather, a 57 year old originally from Manchester, who has been on the run since 2010.
As part of “Operation Captura”, officers swooped on Mather´s car in the area of La Línea de la Concepción, Cádiz, where he was found to be carrying false documents.
In May, 2010, officers from the United Kingdom Borders Agency (UKBA) discovered 32 individual packages of heroin, each weighing around a kilo, hidden in the modified space of the rear bumper of a vehicle at the Humber Sea Terminal located at Killingholme, England. Mather was a regular user of the sea terminal and was linked to two other people in the case.
“Operation Captura” was launched in 2006 as a Crimestoppers campaign to identify offenders who have fled British justice and could be in Spain. Since then, the 76 fugitives have been located and 58 have been arrested. The current campaign is operating under the hash tag “#Unlucky13”, in which the thirteen most wanted criminals are given high profile, Mather being the second on that list to be detained.
The police have stressed that the cooperation of citizens is “fundamental” and any information provided to Crimestoppers can help locate criminals. From Spain calls are free to the number 900 555 111 to report sightings o suspicions, and can be anonymous. In addition, the Spanish National Police are also available to all citizens with any information by phoning 091 or emailing fugitivos@policia.es.
