The political opposition of Orihuela has been dealt another blow this week, as the judge in Elche hearing the case relating to the blocking of a censure motion that would have led to a change in government has postponed the hearing until the 14th of May.
This is the second time that this particular hearing has been postponed, firstly in February, due to a lack of information, and again on Thursday of this week after two hours of deliberation.
The likelihood of confusion had already been anticipated, due to the complexity of the case being presented, and the fact that two lawyers were to represent the defendants in the case, one appointed by the Mayor, the other by the committee of the town hall, chaired by the PP who would therefore be acting on both sides of the legal scales. The mayoral appointed lawyer, José Luis Martínez Morales, refused to give up the right to defend his clients in the case, despite the appointment of Carlos Bernabé by the PP and CLR association.
The Partido Popular group have accused the government team of “torpedoing” the judicial process, considering it unfair that the defenders in this case should have six lawyers to defend the eleven councillors of the Los Verdes, PSOE and two unassigned, namely Bob Houliston and Asuncion Mayoral, much preferring the option for them to choose the council for both sides in this case, the PP deciding on the lawyer to defend against the case they are instrumental in bringing to court.
The hearing in this case is postponed until the 14th of May, the day before the current head of the Partido Popular of Orihuela, Pepa Ferrando, is herself in court on corruption charges.
