DEMEANING TO WOMEN BUT WHAT ABOUT THE BULLS?

The decision of the bullfighting club Tendido 7 y l’Hermitage in hiring a topless woman to publicise the upcoming Sant Vicent Ferrer by walking topless through the streets of Zeneta Xilxes for just over half an hour has sparked controversy in the region.

The organisers of the Sant Vicent Ferrer de la Vall d’Uixó say that they are extremely unhappy with the President of the club, David Pitarch, saying that "what happened is demeaning to women as a prestigious festival such as Sant Vicent Ferrer.

They said that the commission had nothing to do with the hiring of the woman and they had no record of it, so the matter was not of their doing. They also apologized for the President’s actions.

A spokesman of the Penya l’Hermitage justified the decision by saying that the young was hired for a bit of fun and to provide a little publicity to the upcoming fair. It was little more than a joke, and they certainly did not expect their actions to have the national impact that it has.

The PSOE PSPV in La Vall D’Uixó criticized the incident, saying that hiring a topless woman as poster "is attacking the dignity of women." The Socialists also stressed in a statement that they must "be strong in rejecting and preventing any attack on the dignity of persons.

The have also demanded that the mayor and councilors of all parties issue an official statement of rejection. Unfortunately in many areas of Spain bullfighting continues to be recognized, not as the cruel spectacle that it is, but as a cultural heritage, as the Spanish Senate continues to allow the use of public funds to sustain the industry, despite substantial opposition from the vast majority of the Spanish public.
