FOURTEEN COUNCILLORS CULLED IN CENSUS CLEAN UP

As further details come to light regarding the cleaning of the census figures by the Institute of National Statistics, the aftermath of the drop of numbers is set to have serious repercussions on the amount of council representation in the Vega Baja area.

In total, there will be 14 council posts removed from the governments affected by the clean up, as tens of thousands of residents are wiped off the census, mostly foreign nationals who are believed to have either moved away, or, in some cases, died.

One of the most serious locations affected is Torrevieja, where losing 15,000 registered residents puts it way below the 100,000 threshold, resulting in a considerable drop in the amount of money the town hall receives from both residential taxes and from the governments. Now, as a result of the cull there, they are set to lose 2 councillor posts, dropping from 27 elected positions to 25.

Los Montesinos will lose 2 councillors, dropping from 13 to 11, and Jacarilla, also set to lose 2, will drop from 11 to 9. San Fulgencio will lose 4, going down from 17 to 13 councillors, and Rojales will also lose 4, dropping from 21 to 17.

In Orihuela, where the population has also dropped, the political situation is unchanged, and they will not lose any council seats as a result of their drop, where the cull will have the least serious impact.

Quite how these council posts will affect the elections in May will remain to be seen, and although the revenue income for these locations will be considerably reduced, the costs in employing these 14 councillors will be a saving, although not of equal terms.

Overall, the outcome of this audit has shown how crucial it is to be registered on the padrón, as the consequences are serious for every resident who may suffer as a result of years of imbalance. There will no doubt be numerous campaigns to try to encourage more people to register, but however the individual town halls choose to dress up their attempts, the important fact is the same, that registration on the padrón is vital.
