A special operation of flood reaction was launched by the government of Valencia last week, whilst an emergency preparation exercise was being conducted across the Vega Baja.
The simulation began with a statement issued by the Emergency Coordination Centre, warning of the risk of heavy rain, after a real “orange” alert was issued by the meteorological office for a risk of flooding across Alicante.
The plan was then implemented to monitor and track the weather conditions, issuing notices to affected municipalities and deploying resources to deal with the potential hazards created by the risk.
The measure is intended to ensure “prompt, effective and coordinated” action of public and private resources in emergency flood situations, and minimize the consequences, hence the importance of participating in drills where it implements the provisions of the protocol actions, a source stated.
During the drill, when the area was coincidentally hit by the biggest rainfall of the year so far, the monitoring continued along the Rio Segura, with the drill declaring emergencies in Rojales, and then Guardamar del Segura. As a result of the hypothetical damage caused, the militarised emergency services, the UME, were dispatched, along with other teams from a variety of emergency services.
The Cruz Roja were also involved and wanted to highlight their contribution. With thirty volunteers and a variety of equipment, they participated in the rescue exercise during the Rojales emergency, with first responders and search and rescue teams deployed to rescue flood victims.
The Cruz Roja has been active in the three provinces of Valencia sine 2012 responding to flood and weather related risks, as well as the cleanup operations immediately afterwards. Primarily focussing on response and rescue, and then caring for the elderly after an incident, their aim is to return those affected to “normal living conditions” as soon as possible.
As well as their International operations, locally, the Cruz Roja also provide hostel care in the event of an emergency, psychological support, healthcare, immigrant care and have some 2,500 volunteers ready to respond in the region, trained, prepared and ready to face any emergency that evolves.
