Red Cross maritime rescue team members in Altea have saved two people who were stranded on a paddle surfboard in the Morro del Toix area.
The pair had set out at dawn, but sea conditions swept their board further out to sea, leaving them unable to return to the shore unassisted, according to a statement released by the Red Cross.
Because they had taken a mobile phone with them, they were able to raise the alarm with emergency services. Rescuers arrived quickly at the scene to carry out the operation before transferring both individuals safely to the Marina Greenwich port in Altea.
Following the incident, the Red Cross reminded members of the public of the necessity to take extreme safety precautions when paddle surfing. The organisation emphasised that before heading out to sea, it is essential to check weather forecasts and sea conditions, wear a lifejacket, keep a mobile phone in a waterproof case, and carry drinking water to remain hydrated.
In addition, people are advised to inform relatives or friends of their planned departure, specifying their intended route and estimated time of return, whilst also keeping clear of designated swimming areas and avoiding paddling too far from the coastline.
